How do I know if I’m an Alcoholic?
That is the million dollar question and my answer is, possibly. I cannot tell you if you’re an alcoholic –no one can– only you know that. The fact that you are asking might be a sign, but beyond that, you will have to decide. It may seem odd to phrase it as, “being an alcoholic is a choice“, but until you admit you have a drinking problem, there is little you or anyone else can do to help. Don’t compare yourself with how other people drink because alcohol abuse is socially acceptable in the main stream flock. Also you don’t need to burn your life to ashes to see that your drinking has continuously lead to problems. If the alcohol has become an issue, then just stop using it. If you have found that you cannot stop or that you can’t imagine life without alcohol… well, maybe it’s time to make a change?
“Technically alcohol is a solution but its the only solution that creates more problems.”
Ask Yourself:
Here are some questions to ponder, but keep in mind that this isn’t a check list it’s more of a self awareness exercise. Deep down you already know the answer you are seeking.
1. Do you ever drink more than you planned to drink?
2. Have you ever tried to quit drinking and couldn’t?
3. Do you ever get the urge to drink when you’re upset?
4. Do you often miss obligations due to drinking?
5. Is your drinking negatively affected your social or family relationships?
6. Have you given up activities you enjoy so that you can drink more often?
7. Has your drinking gotten you into dangerous situations?
8. Has drinking caused you any health problems?
9. Do you crave alcohol after you have stopped drinking?
10. Do you ever ask yourself if you are an alcoholic?
If you can relate to more than a few of these questions, you may have a problem. Now ask yourself, “Do I have a drinking problem? Should I get help? Is alcohol worth going through the -not so fun- stuff that comes during and after I consume alcohol?”
Even if you just want to live a longer, healthier life, there are countless benefits to quitting drinking and you don’t need to be addicted to see that alcohol is a weakness.
Chart a new course
Are you ready to change your course? You can always go back to the alcohol, if you want your misery back. Maybe its time to do some research and take some action! Find a local 12 step meeting, or if that’s not for you, do some research on rehabs.
I checked myself into a rehab, when I made the decision to get sober. It pointed me in the right direction and was the most important decision I ever made. Life has opened up to me and I see this existence, as never before. The freedom and clarity of thought have shown me a new happiness, beyond anything I have ever experienced. The best part of my new life is being able to do all those big things I always used to boast about while I was drunk. Whatever you decide, I wish you luck on your journey. Live long and prosper my friends!
